Introducing the A-Pod

The A Pod was introduced at IMTS 2000. The concept stole the show as the latest in magnetic technology. It was also featured on the IMTS web site for "What's New." The concept was born from customers' need for a more flexible and affordable magnetic system.

Traditionally, if a customer needed a milling magnet or other fixture for a machine with a 20" x 40" table, he felt obligated to purchase a magnetic chuck that covered the entire table at a sizable cost. Unfortunately the customer did not always need a magnet of this size. In addition, the customer needed to raise the part off of the surface of the magnet for through hole or profile work which would require additional top tooling.

As a result of these issues, the A Pod was born. This unique, fully magnetically balanced individual pole works much like a 1 2 3 block but with the clamping power of a heavy milling magnet. Based on the area of contact the part has with the pods, a simple formula will determine the speeds, feeds, or depth of cut to be taken. If the part is small, only 6 pods may be required to hold the part. If the part and cuts are large, more pods can be added. Meantime, the remaining pods can be used on another machine for the most versatile system. Because the pods are independent, they can be located anywhere along the part to allow for through hole work or profile work, and the chips will fall through to the table below.

The A Pod works well with conventional fixturing to reduce vibration. For example, when pods are placed in the center under a large plate the vibration is eliminated. The reduction of vibration allows the machine to operate at its optimum capacity with the best possible finish.

The Pod also works as flexible fixturing in other areas of a facility including: Machining, Welding, Grinding, Assembly, QMM and many others. The A Pod's use is only limited by one's imagination!

The AJB-12 Junction Box is designed to connect up to 12 A-Pods. Subsequent Junction Boxes can be daisy chained to operate more A-Pods up to the recommended maximum for the voltage and controller type.

A-POD Features

The Alpha A-Pod was borne out of the Job Shop market where set ups were always changing and having a dedicated magnetic chuck on one machine was not practical. The A-Pods provided greater flexibility and quicker pay back. Due to the A-Pod's flexibility, customers began to discover other uses for the A-Pods.

The A-Pod is an ideal tool for the creative shop owner, so Tool and Die shops began using the magnets in place of hydraulic fixtures because magnets cost less, are more flexible and require virtually no maintenance. Unlike a chuck, the A-Pod is completely modular and has little impact to a machine's table weight capacity. A set of A-Pods can be shared between multiple machines.

Large plate manufacturer's discovered the benefits of the A-Pods over conventional magnetic chucks, because A-Pods provide sufficient clamping force and greater flexibility for less money and with significantly less weight.

How do you plan to use your A-Pods?

  • The A Pod uses Permanent-Electro Magnetic technology for fail safe operation. Power turns magnetism ON or OFF. No power is required to maintain the Magnetic Clamping.
